This "Webster's II New Riverside Desk Dictionary is an abridgment of "Webster's II New Riverside University Dictionary." Like the parent volume, this book traces its lineage the American lexicographer whose name , more than any other, is associated with lexicography on this continent. As Noah Webster's intent was to create a lexicon specific to the New World, reflecting and serving a unique American culture, so the intent of the present volume is to mirror what our language is and to convey that information in a form appropriate to an inexpensive dictionary. Included are words not in other books of this type, regionalisms, scientific and technical terms, and biographic and geographic entries. Fine line drawings illustrate particular points. Perhaps this edition especially well realizes Noah Webster's dream of a lexicon serving, as he predicted, "three hundred millions of people, who are destined to occupy, and I hope, to adorn the vast territory within our jurisdiction."
